10 Surprising Things Medicare Does NOT Cover

Medicare is powerful, but it has some surprising blind spots. Here are 10 things most Alabama seniors don’t realize Medicare won’t pay for.

1. Long-Term Care in a Nursing Home

Medicare only covers skilled nursing care for up to 100 days after a hospital stay. If you need long-term custodial care, you’re on your own, and the average Alabama nursing home costs $7,300/month.

2. Dental Care

Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental work: no cleanings, fillings, dentures, or extractions. Yet dental health directly impacts heart disease and diabetes management.

3. Vision and Eye Exams

Routine eye exams and eyeglasses aren’t covered. Medicare only covers eye care for specific medical conditions like glaucoma or cataracts.

4. Hearing Aids

Despite hearing loss affecting 1 in 3 seniors, Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids or routine hearing exams. A single hearing aid can cost $1,500-$3,000.

5. Overseas Healthcare

Planning to travel? Original Medicare provides almost no coverage outside the United States. A medical emergency abroad could cost you everything.

6. Cosmetic Surgery

Even procedures that seem medically necessary, like removing excess skin after weight loss, are typically not covered if deemed “cosmetic.”

7. Acupuncture (Except for Back Pain)

Medicare recently started covering acupuncture, but only for chronic lower back pain. Other uses aren’t covered.

8. Concierge or Private-Duty Nursing

If you want a private nurse at home for non-skilled care, Medicare won’t help. This includes help with bathing, dressing, and daily activities.

9. Most Prescription Drugs (Without Part D)

Original Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover prescriptions you fill at a pharmacy. You need a separate Part D plan.

10. Alternative Therapies

Massage therapy, naturopathy, and most chiropractic services beyond spinal manipulation aren’t covered.
